Free Representation Unit

Free Representation Unit

The Free Representation Unit is the largest single provider of pro bono services in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1972 by several law students at bar school. The aim was that they would provide representation for poor people. FRU was perhaps the first pro bono organisation in England [ [http://www.guardian.co.uk/law/story/0,,1790285,00.html Win or lose, no fee: pro bono week promotes free legal services | | Guardian Unlimited ] ] .

FRU operates from London providing representation in Employment, Social Security, Immigration and Criminal Injuries compensation tribunals. Other principle pro bono organisations in London include the Bar Pro Bono Unit, Lawworks and Citizens Advice Bureau. All organisations are represented on the Attorney General for England and Wales's Pro Bono Committee [ [http://www.probonouk.net/index.php?id=resources&rid=28 ProBonoUK.net ] ] .
