Khandaghosh is a town, police station and community development block in the Sadar subdivision of Bardhaman District, West Bengal, India.

Geography

It has an average elevation of m to ft|43|m|abbr=on. Unlike the rest of Bardhaman district, which lies to the north of the Damodar River, the Khandaghosh-Jamalpur-Raina area lies on the alluvial plains between the Damodar on its southern/ eastern side and the Dwarakeswar river. As a result, it has been a flood prone area. History

Administrative set up

In Peterson’s "District Gazeteer" of 1910 there is mention of Khandaghosh and other police stations in Bardhaman subdivision. [ Chattopadhyay, Akkori, p369 ] In 1968-69, Khandaghosh and other blocks were created. [ Chattopadhyay, Akkori, p388 ]

Movements

Damodar floods wrought havoc in the area and Dasarathi Tah initiated the ‘Nakrah hana embankment movement’ and even published a weekly newspaper named "Damodar" to focus on the problems faced by the people in the area. [ Chattopadhyay, Akkori, p478 ] The August movement of 1942 had a great impact in the area. The post office at Khandaghosh was burnt down. [ Chattopadhyay, Akkori, p454 ] In 1942, the Communist Party started building its rural peasant bases under the leadership of Benoy Choudhury. Leaders in the area were Sahedullah and Panchu Guha. A dispensary was set up at Khandaghosh as early as 1804. [ Chattopadhyay, Akkori, p868 ]

Demographics

Khandaghosh community development block spread over 256.13 km² and had a total population of 170,331 in 2001. Out of this, 87,636 were males and 82,695 were females. Politics

Prasanta Majhi of the CPI (M) won the Khandaghosh (SC) assembly seat in 2006 defeating his nearest rival Biswanath Roy of AITC. In 2001, Jyotsna Singha of CPI (M) defeated Banshi Badan Roy of AITC. In 1996, 1991 and 1986 Shiba Prasad Dalui of CPI (M) defeated Basudev Mandal, Sankar Nath Maji and Pramatha Dhibar, all of INC, in the respective years. In 1982 and 1977, Purna Chandra Malik of CPI (M) defeated Manoranjan Pramanik of INC. Monoranjan Pramanik of INC won the seat in 1972.
