In 1997, Iwaniec and
John Friedlander proved that there are infinitely manyprime number s of the form . [http://www.ams.org/ams/mathnews/prime.html "Primes in Surprising Places"] ] To accomplish this, Iwaniec and Friedlander had to develop an "astonishing" new theory of prime numbers, applying theasymptotic sieve to the problem of the distribution of prime numbers for the first time. This result is sometimes known as theBombieri–Friedlander–Iwaniec theorem .D. van Golstein Brouwers, J. Bamberg, G. Cairns, "Totally Goldbach numbers and related conjectures".Australian Mathematical Society Gazette . Vol 31(4) (2004), p. 254. [http://www.austms.org.au/Publ/Gazette/2004/Sep04/Sep04.pdf Online version] ]In 2001 Iwaniec was awarded the seventh
Ostrowski Prize . [http://www.ams.org/notices/200207/comm-ostrowski.pdf "Iwaniec, Sarnak, and Taylor Receive Ostrowski Prize"] ] The prize citation read, in part, "Iwaniec's work is characterized by depth, profound understanding of the difficulties of a problem, and unsurpassed technique. He has made deep contributions to the field ofanalytic number theory , mainly inmodular form s on "GL"(2) and sieve methods."Publications
