Steve Whan (born
11 February 1964 ) is anAustralia n politician and a the member of theNew South Wales Legislative Assembly . He has represented Monaro for theAustralian Labor Party since 2003.Whan was born in
Canberra ,Australian Capital Territory , son ofBob Whan , a former member of the federal seat of Eden-Monaro, and educated at the CanberraCollege of Advanced Education (nowUniversity of Canberra ), where he received aBachelor of Arts in Social Sciences, majoring in Economics and Politics Interests in 1985. In 1998, he received a Graduate Certificate in Management from theUniversity of Western Sydney .From August 1987 to February 1988 Whan was Assistant Private Secretary to John Brown, Federal Minister for Arts, Sport, the Environment, Tourism and Territories. From February 1988 to May 1992 he worked for then Senator
Bob McMullan . From May 1992 to March 1994 he worked forRos Kelly including the period known as theSports rorts affair , Federal Minister for Environment, Sport and Territories. He worked for theAustralian Sports Commission from 1994 to August 2001 and subsequently became a consultant on community relations and sport before running for Parliament.Whan lives in Queanbeyan with his wife and two children.
