During its first year of official operation (2005-2006), the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League consisted of teams from Trinity Western University, Simon Fraser University, University of Victoria, University of Northern British Columbia and University of the Fraser Valley. One season later (2006-2007), Selkirk College replaced University of Northern British Columbia; however, it is rumored that University of Northern British Columbia may rejoin the league for the 2008-2009 season. It is also speculated that teams from University of British Columbia Okanagan and Thompson Rivers University may be joining the BCIHL.

Each team plays each other throughout the season four times, twice at home and twice on the road. At the conclusion of the regular season, which is generally the second weekend of every March, a tournament is held at Trinity Western University's home rink, the Langley Twin Rinks in Langley, British Columbia, where the top four teams in league standings play in a round robin tournament.
