- Extended file system
The extended file system, ext or ext1 was invented in April 1992 and the first
file system created specifically for theLinux operating system.It was designed by
Rémy Card to overcome certain limitations of theMinix file system .It is the first of the extended file systems. It was superseded by both
ext2 andxiafs , between which there was a competition, whichext2 won because of its long-term viability.Other extended file systems
