Baripada is a city and a municipality in Mayurbhanj district in the state of Orissa, India. Baripada is the district headquarters. It is an excellent place to stay and tour the Mayurbhanj region, a region with one of the most important wildlife parks of India (Similipal), lush valleys, forest lands and scores of ancient temples. It is the shopping paradise for the people of whole Mayurbhanj district.
Rathyatra (Car Festival) is one of the main attractions of Baripada. Baripada is also the home of the world famous Mayurbhanj Chhau dance, an ancient Hindu dance form.

Geography

Education

Baripada is the seat for North Orissa University. Since its humble beginning in 1999, this is now a prominent university in the state of Orissa. It is also home to the Maharaja Purna Chandra College (MPC), to which many students come from different parts of Orissa and also from neighbouring states. The oldest and most prominent high school is Maharaja Krushna Chandra(MKC)High School which was established in 1889.

Transportation

Baripada was the first to witness a train communication in Orissa. The then Ruler of Mayurbhanj HH Maharaja Krushna chandra Bhanjdeo connected Baripada by a narrow gauge rail network to the Howrah-Chennai railway corridor.

Now a broad gauge railway line has replaced it which has benefited over 100,000 of this city's population. Now a new superfast train from this city to the state capital of Bhubaneswar has begun its operation. New trains to Puri and Kolkata are on cards. So it can be said that this city is fairly well connected to the outside world by rail.

In case of road transport, Baripada witnesses the maximum number of Luxury bus owners of Orissa.Fact|date=September 2008 There is a very good connectivity to Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Kolkata from here.

The city is merely 30K.M. from the starting point of N.H.5 which goes to Chennai. Also this starting point named Jharpokharia is the meeting point of N.H 5 & N.H.6 (Kolkata-Mumbai).

Also wide range of taxis are available for sight seeing and tours.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Baripada had a population of 94,947. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Baripada has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 87% of the males and 65% of females literate. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Politics

Current MLA from Baripada Assembly Constituency is Bimal Lochan Das of JMM, who won the seat in State elections of 2004. Previous MLAs from this seat were Kishore Dash of JMM who won this seat in 2000, Prasanna Kumar Dash who won representing INC(I) in 1980 and representing INC in 1995, 1985 and 1977, and Chhatish Chandra Dhal of JD in 1990.
