Ebara Soroku

Ebara Soroku

(March 10, 1842-May 19, 1922) was a samurai of the late Edo period who went on to become an educator and politician in the Meiji era. Born the son of a lesser retainer of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Ebara was an exceptionally talented scholar. Following his combat service at the Battle of Toba-Fushimi, he assisted in the founding of the Numazu Military Academy (opened following the main Tokugawa family's move to Shizuoka han) and other schools.

Becoming a Christian in 1877, he was responsible for starting the Numazu Church. Later, Ebara served as head of the Tokyo YMCA. Ebara also had a career in politics, serving in the House of Representatives and later, the House of Peers.

Ebara is also remembered as the founder of Azabu High School (then a middle school)
