- Ebara Soroku

March 10 ,1842 -May 19 ,1922 ) was a samurai of the lateEdo period who went on to become an educator and politician in the Meiji era. Born the son of a lesser retainer of theTokugawa Shogunate , Ebara was an exceptionally talented scholar. Following his combat service at theBattle of Toba-Fushimi , he assisted in the founding of theNumazu Military Academy (opened following the main Tokugawa family's move toShizuoka han ) and other schools.Becoming a Christian in 1877, he was responsible for starting the Numazu Church. Later, Ebara served as head of the Tokyo YMCA. Ebara also had a career in politics, serving in the House of Representatives and later, the House of Peers.
Ebara is also remembered as the founder of
Azabu High School (then a middle school)External links
