Formative Driven Instruction

Formative Driven Instruction

Formative Driven Instruction (FDI) is an instructional model that draws from two other highly touted instructional data processes, Data Driven Decision Making (D3M) and Data Driven Instruction (DDI). Formative Driven Instruction emphasizes that a teacher needs to use the FDI model to evaluate a students progress on academic standards and monitor the effect of academic interventions.

Hierarchical Structure

Formative Driven Instruction adopts its model and focus directly from D3M and DDI using a hierarchical emphasis

*D3M - Data Driven Decision Making
**DDI - Data Driven Instruction
***FDI - Formative Driven Instruction

The distinctive difference between Formative Driven Instruction, D3M and DDI is that FDI is focused at the teacher or instructor levels, where D3M is often focused at the administrative levels and DDI is often focused on the summative data levels.

FDI Focus

Formative Driven Instruction is used directly at the instructional classroom level by a teacher or instructor to inform instruction, student learning using Standards, Curriculum Maps, Pre-Assessments, Direct Instruction, Post-Assessments, and Re-Teaching.

The Basic Formative Driven Instruction Model:

*Know the standards
**Know the instructional curriculum level standards
**Know the instructional summative test ratios

*Develop and use a Curriculum Map, Pacing Guide or Basic Instruction Guide
**Tie map to standards
**Tie map to formative assessments
**Tie map to a calendars
**Tie map to lesson plans
**Tie map to any district/school emphasis.

*Give pre-assessment test via formative testing model
**Determine if the students already know the concept
**Determine if the students need review, reinforcement or full lesson/unit of concept
**Determine if only some students need review, reinforcement or full lesson/unit of concept

*Teach concept through instruction
**Tie instruction to [http://www.mcrel.org/topics/products/19/ “Classroom Instruction that Works: Research-Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement"]
**Tie instruction to standards aligned lesson plan or unit
**Tie instruction to standards aligned resources

*Give post-assessment test via formative testing model
**Review assessment data results report
**Identify weak student at the standards objective level
**Identify weak instruction area
**Adjust curriculum map

*Re-teach unit using different resources, lessons or strategies
