"La Sagouine" is a novel written by
New Brunswick authorAntonine Maillet that tells the story of "la Sagouine", anAcadian washerwoman from rural New Brunswick. The novel is essentially a collection of monologues, written inChiac , a mixture of the French and English languages which is commonly spoken by Acadians. At the time of its publication in 1971, the language that the novel was written in was closer to French. It has since been translated into English by Luis de Céspedes in 1984, and most recently by Wayne Grady in 2007, based on the second enlarged edition published in 1974 by Les Editions Lemeac.References
