Appurtenance (Philippine Military Awards)

An appurtenance is a device added or attached to the basic decoration to distinguished each deed and succeeding deeds of achievements falling under the same category of the decoration. Instead of awarding the same decoration and service medal, an appurtenance is substituted for the medal. The different types of appurtenances are: Anahaw Leaf, Equilateral Triangle, Service Star and Spearhead Device, each of which is further categorized into Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Categories & Levels of Appurtenance

Specifically, the said appurtenances are affixed to the decorations and service medals according to the frequency in earning the same decorations and the service medals, done in the following manner:

*Bronze Anahaw Leaf - Shall be awarded to the first, second, third and fourth succeeding deeds instead of the Medal for Valor, Distinguished Conduct Star, Distinguished Service Star, Gold Cross, Navy Cross, Philippine Legion of Honor, Outstanding Achievement Medal, Distinguished Aviation Cross, Bronze Cross, Kagitingan sa Barangay, Military Merit Medal, Silver Wing Medal or Wounded Personnel Medal.

*Silver Anahaw Leaf - Shall be awarded for every fifth succeeding Bronze Anahaw Leaf instead of Medal for Valor, Distinguished Conduct Star, Distinguished Service Star, Gold Cross, Navy Cross, Philippine Legion of Honor, Outstanding Achievement Medal, Distinguished Aviation Cross, Bronze Cross, Kagitingan sa Barangay, Military Merit Medal, Silver Wing Medal or Wounded Personnel Medal.

*Gold Anahaw Leaf - Shall be awarded in place of the fifth Silver Anahaw Leaf.

*Bronze Equilateral Triangle - Shall be awarded for the first, second, third and fourth succeeding deeds instead of Military Commendation Medal.

*Silver Equilateral Triangle - Shall be awarded for every fifth succeeding Bronze Equilateral Triangle instead of Military Commendation Medal.

*Gold Equilateral Triangle - Shall be awarded after the fourth succeeding deeds in lieu of the fifth Silver Equilateral Triangle of the Military Commendation Medal.

*Bronze Service Star - Shall be awarded and affixed on the service (campaign) ribbon and badge for each succeeding campaign/major battle engagement/participation in unit massive operations.

*Silver Service Star - Instead of the fifth Bronze Service Star, this shall be affixed on the service, (campaign) ribbon and badge for every fifth succeeding campaign/major battle engagement/participation in unit massive operations.

*Gold Service Star - Shall be awarded in place of the fifth Silver Service Star.

*Bronze Spearhead Device - Shall be awarded for the first, second, third and fourth succeeding deeds instead of the Military Merit Medal for heroic achievement.

*Silver Spearhead Device - Shall be awarded for every fifth succeeding deeds in lieu of the fifth Bronze Spearhead Device.

*Gold Spearhead Device - Shall be awarded after the fourth succeeding deeds in lieu of the fifth Silver Spearhead Device.
