Plot

After saying goodbye to Nurse Roberts, the Sacred Heart staff institutes some of her lessons into their lives. Though Carla thinks they've all forgotten, Dr. Cox takes time to reflect on his purpose; Elliot opens her heart to Keith; and J.D. and Turk learn compassion.

After the preacher at Laverne's funeral suggests that everyone take 20 minutes for themselves each day, Dr. Cox attempts to do so. However, he is repeatedly interrupted by interns and residents that need his assistance, seriously testing his patience. Dr. Kelso points out that Cox thrives on the fact that he is everyone's go-to guy, and Cox seems to admit this to himself and Kelso.

Keith tells Elliot that he wants to skip out on their one-year anniversary to visit a friend in Las Vegas. Elliot quickly grants his request, only to find out later that this was a test from Keith, who calls Elliot out on not caring about their relationship and says it's not working out. Later, when Elliot is out for drinks with Jordan and Carla, Carla points out that Elliot's sabotaged all her relationships ever since she opened up to J.D. and had her heart broken. Elliot later tells Keith she loves him and they patch things up.

J.D. treats a deaf patient and learns that The Janitor knows sign language. They are shocked when the father, also deaf, won't give consent for his son to receive a surgical implant that would allow him to hear. J.D., Turk and The Janitor then go to the mother to allow the surgery. However, once they have her consent they realize that the father wanted his son to stay deaf because it was one of the few things that kept them close. Carla, who complained throughout the episode that everyone seemed to move on with their lives and pretended that Laverne never existed, then comes to terms that Laverne is in the thoughts of every one of the doctors.
