DD21

The DD21 program was a U.S. Navy destroyer program of the late 1990s. It was an offshoot of the SC21 program (SC for surface combatant, and 21st century). The DD21 program had its budget cut by over a half in the very early 2000s. Rather than then cancel it altogether, the Navy scaled back the ship design and re-organized for cheaper, less advanced design in 2001. This resulted in the DD(X) program, which became the Zumwalt class destroyer. The design heavily emphasized automation to reduce crewing, with some concepts carrying fewer than 100 sailors (the "Arleigh Burke" class destroyer has a crew of 350).
