- USS Pargo (SSN-650)
USS "Pargo" (SSN-650), a "Sturgeon"-class submarine, was the second ship of the
United States Navy to be named for thepargo , a fish of the genus "Lutianus" found in theWest Indies . The contract to build her was awarded to theElectric Boat Division ofGeneral Dynamics Corporation inGroton, Connecticut on26 March 1963 and her keel was laid down on3 June 1964 . She was launched on17 September 1966 sponsored by Mrs. James L. Holloway, Jr., and commissioned on5 January 1968 , with Commander Steven A. White in command.Assigned to Submarine Development Group 2, with a homeport of
New London, Connecticut , she conducted acoustic trials and a restricted availability atGroton, Connecticut , then participated in the search for "Scorpion" (SSN-589) from27 May to7 June 1968 , and spent the rest of the year conducting various trials in theCaribbean Sea and off New London."Pargo" was decommissioned and stricken from the
Naval Vessel Register on14 April 1995 . Ex-"Pargo" entered the Nuclear PoweredShip and Submarine Recycling Program inBremerton, Washington , on1 October 1994 and on15 October 1996 ceased to exist.References
