- USS Pipefish (SS-388)
USS "Pipefish" (SS-388), a "Balao"-class submarine, was the only ship of the
United States Navy to be named for thepipefish , a long, narrow, bony-scaled fish with straight, tubular snout found inPanama that has extraordinary powers of concealment in vegetation. Her keel was laid down on31 May 1943 by thePortsmouth Navy Yard . She was launched on12 October 1943 sponsored by Mrs. George J. Bates, and commissioned on22 January 1944 , with Lieutenant Commander William N. Deragon in command.Following training off the East Coast, "Pipefish" proceeded via the
Panama Canal toPearl Harbor ,Hawaii , where she arrived3 May 1944 .On her first war patrol,
24 May to16 July , "Pipefish" cruised west of theMariana Islands , as a rescue submarine for pre-invasion carrier strikes onSaipan , saving one pilot on12 June . She also cruised in theSurigao Straits to block Japanese escape from theBattle of the Philippine Sea . She moored atMajuro on16 July .On her second war patrol,
6 August to27 September , she patrolled off the southeastern coast ofHonshū ,Japan . "Pipefish" sank "Hakutetsu Maru Number Seven", 1018 tons, on12 September . While evading escorts after that attack, she struck bottom three times. She returned toPearl Harbor on27 September .On her third war patrol,
28 October 1944 to6 January 1945 , "Pipefish" roamed southwest of Taiwan and off the east coast ofHainan Island ,China , operating with submarines USS|Pampanito|SS-383|3, USS|Sea Cat|SS-399|3, and USS|Searaven|SS-196|3. 31 January to26 March , "Pipefish" provided rescue capability for downed aviators in theNansei Shoto area.During her fifth war patrol,
28 April to16 June , she performed lifeguard duty forB-29 Superfortress aviators offHonshū , and in theNanpō Islands area. "Pipefish" saved eight aviators on26 May ,29 May , and10 June . She moored atMidway Island on16 June .Her sixth war patrol,
15 July to28 August , called for lifeguard duty in theNanpō Islands area and off the east coast ofKyūshū . On patrol she destroyed eightnaval mine s. Following termination of hostilities with Japan she arrived at Pearl Harbor on28 August , and then proceeded to the West Coast."Pipefish" decommissioned on
19 March 1946 , and joined the Pacific Reserve Fleet. She was reclassified as an auxiliary submarine and givenhull classification symbol AGSS-388 on1 December 1962 . She was struck from theNaval Vessel Register on1 March 1967 and sold on20 January 1969 ."Pipefish" received six
