- HMS Grampus (N56)
HMS "Grampus" (N56) was the lead ship of the "Grampus"-class mine-laying
submarine of theRoyal Navy . She was built atChatham Dockyard and launchedFebruary 25 ,1936 . She served inWorld War II offChina before moving to theMediterranean Sea . She was sunk by theRegia Marina onJune 16 1940 .On
June 16 ,1940 , under the command of Lieutenant-Commander C. A. Rowe, "Grampus" was laying mines in the Syracuse andAugusta, Sicily area. She was seen by the ItalianSpica class torpedo boat "Circe", which was on anti-submarine patrol with "Clio", "Calliope", and "Polluce". Within a very short time "Grampus" was destroyed. Wreckage came to the surface along with air bubbles and oil. "Polluce" was credited with the kill. There were no survivors. Some sources give the date of this action asJune 24 ,1940 ee also
