Hyperball (video game)

Hyperball (video game)

Hyperball is a computer game created for the Acorn Electron and BBC Micro. The game was developed by Steve Parkinson from his home in Colchester, UK and took nearly two years to complete.

Development of Hyperball was completed in 1989 and released on Play It Again Sam 13 in 1990 (Superior Software/Acornsoft) winning the Electron User Golden Game award the same year.

Gameplay

Hyperball followed the traditional Breakout style, with some additional strategy and features. Once a level was completed, it is possible to "buy" weapons to help with the next level.

When blocks were hit, an assortment of "capsules" occasionally dropped, providing a variety of options. These included an infrared view which allowed the player to see otherwise "invisible" blocks, a laser cannon, a ball detonator which exploded the ball into eight separate balls and a diamond cutter which allowed the ball to travel through anything.

An alien also sometimes fell, with effects including biting a hole in the bat, magnetizing the bat (making control difficult) or speeding up the ball.

Playing Hyperball

Hyperball is available for download on http://www.stairwaytohell.com, using an Emulator for the BBC Micro or Acorn Electron.
