- Waterside, Derry
The Waterside is an urban neighbourhood on the east side of the
River Foyle opposite the "Cityside" ofDerry ,Northern Ireland . Traditionally, the Waterside ends at the Caw roundabout near theFoyle Bridge . Areas such asStrathfoyle , Eglinton andLimavady are not part of the Waterside.Historically, the majority of the local population was Protestant, but the demographics now suggest that the religions are approximately equal. [According to the raw 2001 Census figures, there are 3.4% more Catholics than
Protestants , though the results suggest that there are 1.2% people from a Protestant "background" than a Catholic "background" http://cain.ulst.ac.uk/issues/population/popchangederry05.pdf] . This is in contrast to Derry's Cityside where there is a large Catholic and nationalist majority. Most of the Waterside coucillors on
Derry City Council are unionists and generally identify with the name "Londonderry".As a result of
the Troubles , the Waterside's Protestant population has increased, probably caused by migration from the west side of the river. [http://cain.ulst.ac.uk/issues/segregat/temple/appndx_1.htm]Transport
