John D. Smith

Professor John D. Smith, professor of linguistics at Cambridge, has been involved in working on various topics for most of the last quarter-century in the language/literature/culture of Rajasthan. Much of this time was devoted to a major project on the hero-deity Pabuji: this was published in 1991 as The epic of Pabuji (Cambridge University Press).

More generally, he is interested in Indian (Hindu) mythology and epic narrative; he is now working on the Mahabharata, and expect to produce a popular scholarly abridged translation in the fullness of time.

Professor John D. Smith is interested in the application of computers to textual study, and intend to make full use of them in his work on the Mahabharata.
