Randy Brush

Randy Brush was a rising star in the New York City jazz scene in the early 1980's. Growing up in San Diego, he played drums in a local San Diego act called "The Bright Side", as well as scoring Superior ratings at state-wide rudimental snare drum competitions. In addition, as a teenager he joined the So. California State Honor Band one year. The "Bright Side" was a group directed by Don Ward, whose son Kelly Ward (also in the group) would continue on to fame in Grease (film) Another cast member, Brian Stokes Mitchell went on to win a Tony Award for "Ragtime". This experience with tap-dancers would influence his drumset technique forever.

As an interesting aside, he attended the infamous Clairemont High School in the early 70's , as well as growing up next door to comedienne Mo Gaffney

Randy toured "Up With People" [http://wwww.upwithpeople.org] during 1974-1975 with Cast "B", both North and South America were covered during the tour. He went on to the United States Air Force Band of The East [http://www.usafband.com] at McGuire Air Force Base from 1975-1979, a group that fielded a pretty impressive array of alumni including, Marcus McLaurine (Max Roach), Joel Brown (Chris Brubeck), and Sergius Yow. (Maynard Ferguson)

He studied drums with Joe LaBarbera during Joe's tenure with Bill Evans in the late 70's. He then went on to teach in Manhattan at a place called "Sounds of Joy" that later merged with and became "The Drummers Collective" [http://www.thecoll.com]

Although semi-retired for some time, his wife Kim's job took them to Grinnell College in Iowa where he is a part of the Grinnell Percussion Ensemble [http://web.grinnell.edu/music/ensembles/percussion/index.html]

He is currently enjoying performing, teaching, and composing in various musical venues at the college.
