Asan is a city in South Chungcheong Province, South Korea. It is located at coord|36|47|N|126|59|E|region:KR_type:city(103,122),bordering Seoul Metropolitan Area(Population of 25 millions) to the north. It is known for its hot springs. It is a city of spa.Asan has pretty much absorbed the neighboring village, Onyang, which is also known for its hot springs. Onyang is not to be confused with Onyang-eup in Ulsan.

It shares with the neighbouring city of Cheonan a station for the KTX high speed trains, called Cheonan-Asan Station.It takes about 30minutes from Asan city to Seoul by the KTX train (speed:300km per hour).It can be reached within an hour and half from Inchon International Airport by car.

Seoul Metropolitan Subway is to extend its line service to Asan city by the end of 2008.Two major highways such as "Seoul-Busan" and "West Coast" expressways also pass through Asan city.

The world-class companies like Hyundai Motor,Samsung LCD,and Samsung Electronic have their factories in Asan. A total of 14 industrial complexes are currently occupied by autoparts,electronic parts and other factories.

Pyeongtaek international port, closest to the east China among Korean ports, is nearby(about 30 minutes by car). Asan city is a promising destination for investment.

There are five(5)universities here.Asan is aiming to turn into a green hi-tech city.

Modern history

* In 1983, alteration of townships(ri) and towns(myun) was made. [Allowance of alteration concerning from cities to townships(ris)(1983-01-10)]
* In 1986, Onyang eup(town) of Asan was separated and independent city of Onyang was generated. [ Provisional changes including Guri city and 11 cities and counties and permission of modification naming Naju.(1985.12.28.) from Constitution of the Republic of Korea ]
* In 1995, the City of Onyang and Asan County were combined into the City of Asan. [ Institution dealing with complex of city-county.(1994.8.3.)]

Famous people

Famous people associated with Asan include the late Yun Po Sun, former President of South Korea.

Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who defeated the Japanese navy in the 16th century, lived for some time in Asan. There is a miniature replica of his turtle ship on the outskirts of town.
