George Strother

George Strother

George French Strother (1783 – November 28, 1840) was a nineteenth century politician and lawyer from Virginia. He was the father of James French Strother and great-grandfather of another named James French Strother.

Born in Stevensburg, Virginia, Strother attended the College of William and Mary, studied law and was admitted to the bar, commencing practice in Culpeper County, Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1806 to 1809 and was later elected a Democratic-Republican to the United States House of Representatives in 1816, serving from 1817 to 1820. Strother then became receiver of public money in St. Louis, Missouri where he died on November 28, 1840. He was originally interred in Christ Church Cemetery and was later reinterred in Bellefontaine Cemetery in 1860.
