The M54B25 is a 2.5 L (2494 cc) engine with an convert|84|mm|in|1|abbr=on bore and convert|75|mm|in|1|abbr=on stroke. It is all-alloy with Al-Sil block, fracture-split forged steel connecting rods, a one-piece cast camshaft, and a reinforced plastic intake manifold. Output is 192 hp (143 kW) at 6000 rpm with 175 ft·lbf (245 Nm) of torque at 3500 rpm. It is built in Steyr, Austria.

M54B30

The M54B30 is a 3.0 L (2979 cc) successor of the 2.8 L BMW M52. Bore remains the same at convert|84|mm|in|1|abbr=on, but stroke is increased convert|5.6|mm|in|1|abbr=on to convert|89.6|mm|in|1|abbr=on. Power is 231 hp (168 kW) at 5,900 rpm while torque is 221 ft·lbf (300 Nm) at 3,500 rpm.

It is an all-alloy engine with Al-Sil block. It uses SFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder with Double VANOS (variable valve timing) and features fracture-split forged steel connecting rods, a one-piece cast crankshaft, and reinforced plastic intake manifold. It is produced in Steyr, Austria.

The M54B30 was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list through 2001-2003.

252 kW, Auto Nm|365|0The S54B32 is a high-performance engine used in BMW M vehicles. It replaces the U.S. S52B32 and the European S50B32 engines of the E36 M3. Its block is made from grey cast iron rather than aluminum to achieve greater rigidity from the same dimensions. It is a 3.2 L (3246 cc) engine; bore is convert|87|mm|in|1|abbr=on and stroke is convert|91|mm|in|1|abbr=on. Power output is 343 hp (252 kW) at 7900 rpm with 269 ft·lb (365 Nm) of torque at 4900 rpm with an 8000 rpm redline. These performance numbers apply only to non-US versions of this engine in the M3, as the US version of this engine required some modifications (such as close-coupled catalytic converters closer to the engine exhaust ports) and thus produced slightly less power at 333 hp (248 kW) and 262 ft·lb (355 Nm). The Z4 using this engine was rated at 330 HP, while the Z3 that used this engine was rated at 315 HP.

The S54 won the International Engine of the Year award overall for 2001, and also claimed the "Best New Engine" that year as well as won the 3-4 L category for six straight years in a row from 2001 through 2006. The S54 was also on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 2002 through 2004.

The S54 used to be known as the Engine of Damocles because of the tendency of early production M3s to explode spectacularly at elevated engine speeds. BMW attempted to blame vehicle owners for the failures early on but eventually started replacing rod bearings, oil pumps, and whole engines under warranty. Fact|date=February 2007 This fault was attributed to a problem with the connecting rod bottom-end bearing shells that were supplied to BMW by a third party that did not meet BMW's specifications. Fact|date=February 2007. This problem was fully corrected by BMW on engines produced after 06/2003. A recall was done to retrofit all previously produced engines with the proper bearing shells.
