PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award

The PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award honours writers anywhere in the world who have fought courageously in the face of adversity for the right to freedom of expression.

Established in 1987, the award is administered by PEN American Center and underwritten by PEN trustee Barbara Goldsmith. Awards have been granted to 42 writers from around the world. Of the 32 award winners who were in prison at the time they were honoured, 30 have subsequently been released.
