John McEntire

John McEntire (born April 9, 1970 in Portland, Oregon) is an American drummer and multi-instrumentalist. He is a member of post-rock outfits Tortoise, Gastr Del Sol, The Sea and Cake, and Exploding Star Orchestra. He was also a principal musician on Jim O'Rourke's Terminal Pharmacy and has appeared on many other solo O'Rourke projects. Over the years, he has contributed drums and other instruments for many bands, including Bastro, Stereolab, Red Krayola, Shrimp Boat, My Dad is Dead, and The Oily Bloodmen. His drumming work as a sideman can be heard on the following recordings, among others: "Since" by Richard Buckner, "Enantiodromia" and "Life on the Fly", both by Azita, "Near-Life Experience" by Come, "Kernel" by Seam, and "The Spectrum Between", by David Grubbs.

McEntire is the owner of Soma Electronic Music Studios in Chicago. McEntire attended Oberlin College, initially as a percussion major, eventually switching to study in the school's newly created program for Technology in Music and Related Arts. He produces and engineers most of the recordings for his own bands, as well as many of the solo efforts by bandmates Sam Prekop, Archer Prewitt, CJ Tingler(stagename), and Doug McCombs. He has also has engineered, produced, and/or mixed albums and tracks for many artists including: Bright Eyes, Kaki King, Tom Ze, The Ex, Smog, Eleventh Dream Day, Cougar, Antibalas, The For Carnation, Dianogah, U.S. Maple, Chicago Underground Duo, Pivot and The Fiery Furnaces. McEntire also produced the self-titled first release by Trans Am.
