- Komati Gorge
Komati Gorge is a
river valley in theMpumalanga Province in centralSouth Africa , which features vertical sandstone cliffs that providehabitat for a wide diversity of wildlife. Komati Gorge is located near the communities of Carolina andMachadodorp . TheKomati River flows through thegorge and providesriparian cover for manyspecies offlora andfauna , including several endemicendangered species and big game animals. Thegeology of the verticalcliff s of the gorge offer a diverse set of colourfulmineral ized exposures. Within Komati Gorge are the Kromberg Formation and upper Hooggenoeg Formation; where the latter formation exists, debris flows, turbidite s, and thin graychert units are exhibited. Furthermore, there is a banded iron formation present in the bluffs.Ecology and geology
The Komati Gorge contains a great diversity of flora and fauna, including many large
mammal ianspecies . There are several discrete types ofhabitat present, includingriparian zone , bluff habitat, thornbushveld andhighveld grassland . The river provides not only water forwildlife and aquaticvegetation , but also supports a robustriver inetrout fishery . The bluffs support a very specializedecosystem including vegetation adapted to the steep rocky verticallandform of thegorge sides. [ [http://www.luminatechnologies.org/luminawws.html C. Michael Hogan and Amy Gregory, "Ecology of Komati Gorge", Lumina Technolgies, July 22, 2006] ] In addition there are favourable opportunities forbird habitat, providing more protection from certain predators; for example thethreatened Southern Bald Ibis inhabits these cliffhabitat s.Mammal species include big game animals as well as smaller fauna; for example
zebra andgiraffe can be found on the bushveld. Eland,Impala and otherbovid s are numerous.Approximately three million years ago the underlying geological formations took shape in the Komati Gorge area, producing one of the Earth's rarest and most endangered
ecosystem s, the ancientgrassland s of Africa. With increasing rainfall on the lowlands, an invasion of trees ensue which now constitute the bushveld of thelowveld ecosystems present here.Access and present situation
Access is from the north, via the towns of Carolina or Machadodorp, which towns are near the main
highway leading toJohannesburg . Most of the Komati Gorge has been historically privately owned wilderness, with someranch ing arriving in the latter half of the 20th century. Since the late 20th century there has been limited development of a lodge and a few country homes. [ [http://www.komatigorge.co.za/ Komati Gorge lodge and wildlife preserve] ] As of the year 2006, visitation to the Komati Gorge is not intense, although there has been a recent case of geo-vandalism in the form of illegal drilling of some of the rockoutcrop s. [ [http://www.gssa.org.za/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=4 Geo-vandalism at Komati Gorge] ] Geo-vandalism is a term meaning defacing, alteration or drilling in significant rock formations either for unauthorisedfossil , collection, mineral exploration or malicious destruction.ee also
