Lynda Chalker, Baroness Chalker of Wallasey, who was then the UK's Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and Minister for Overseas Development, Sir John assisted the British delegation which participated in the first Tokyo International Conference on African Developmentin October 1993. Sir John has several high-profile positions, including chairman of the
British Museumand served as a non-executive directorfor British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL) between 1997 and 2000. He served as Chairman of Trustees for the Cambridge Union Societyuntil his retirement as Master of Churchill College.
