HCA Spring Academy

The Heidelberg Center for American Studies (HCA) hosts the HCA Spring Academy, Europe's annual graduate conference in American Studies. The HCA Spring Academy aims at establishing an international network for PhD students specializing in the fields of American History, Politics, Law, Economics, Sociology, Literature, and Cultural Studies particularly aspiring to facilitate the insights that can be generated by cross-disciplinary dialogue.

Organization

Papers can be presented on any subject relating to the study of the United States of America. Applicants can be in any phase of their research. The HCA Spring Academy is especially useful for PhD students who are at the beginning of their research.

At the HCA Spring Academy participants are requested to prepare a 20-minute presentation of their research project, which will be followed by a 40-minute discussion allowing for feedback from participants as well as from advisors. Presentations will be arranged thematically in panel groups. Possible topics include Immigration, American Identity, Transatlantic Relations, US Foreign Policy, Gender, Issues of Ethnicity, Diplomatic History as well as other aspects of American History, Politics, and Culture.

The HCA Spring Academy provides participants with the opportunity to work with experts in their fields of study. Guest speakers will be invited for lectures and workshops.
