Little Field Home

The Little Field Home is an orphanage in Chigamba Village, Malawi founded by Janet Littlefield.

The orphanage began in 2003 with the construction of one small building in Chigamba village, Malawi. The small hut was used to house 20 homeless children. Today there are 60 children, four buildings, and fourteen workers and teachers. Yearly projects are funded by the nonprofit organization “Friends of Little Field Home” and directed by Shaibu Kaliati and the Orphanage Committee at Chigamba Village.

In the spring of 2006, the orphanage purchased a Toyota Hiace minibus for transporting orphans to doctors, providing transportation to volunteers and to generate a small income as a taxi service in the local villages.

In the summer of 2006, Hebron Academy teachers Janet Littlefield and Bill Flynn, along with four students, Sarah, Kelley, Laurisa, and Amanda visited and assessed the needs of The Little Field Home. While they were there, they became a part of the community by helping the children and the workers of the orphanage. The students volunteered their time and conducted workshops pertaining to education, health care, nutrition and HIV/AIDS education. A group of 10-12 students, many from Hebron Academy, will accompany Janet and Bill in the summer of 2007 to continue the work of the previous year.

Recently, the orphanage introduced a child sponsorship program where donors can sponsor a specific child living at the orphanage. For $1 a day paid annually, bi-annually or four times a year, donors can provide the child with three meals per day, one school uniform, one blanket, one backpack and shoes. Donors can also write their sponsored child letters and send pictures.

The language spoken in Chigamba Village is Chichewa.
