The name of Athol is either after Harry Athol, the owner of the township's first public house, or after Athol, Perthshire, Scotland, the home town of early local landowner W.B. Rogers.

The altitude of Athol is about 329 meters (http://www.fallingrain.com/world/NZ/0/Athol.html). There are about 70 people within a 7 km radius of Athol (ibid).
