Junichi Hirokami

Junichi Hirokami

Junichi Hirokami (born 1958, Tokyo, Japan) is a Japanese conductor. He studied conducting, piano, musicology, and viola at the Tokyo College of Music. He won the first Kondrashin International Conducting Competition in Amsterdam at age 26. He has been the Principal Guest Conductor of the Japan Philharmonic. From 1991-1996, he was Chief Conductor of the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra.

In January 2006, Hirokami was named the Music Director of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the last of the series of conducting to audition for the post [ [http://www.dispatch.com/features-story.php?story=dispatch/2006/12/31/20061231-F7-01.html Barbara Zuck, "Symphony sets sail after choosing Hirokami for helm". His number of appearances with the orchestra will increase in the 2007-2008 season.
