USS "Mariano G. Vallejo" (SSBN-658), a "Benjamin Franklin"-class
ballistic missile submarine , was named forMariano Guadalupe Vallejo , a key proponent ofCalifornia statehood.The contract to build her was awarded to
Mare Island Naval Shipyard on8 August 1963 and her keel was laid down on7 July 1964 . She was launched on23 October 1965 sponsored by Miss Patricia O.V. McGettigan, and commissioned on16 December 1966 , with Commander Douglas B. Guthe commanding the Blue Crew and Commander John K. Nunneley commanding the Gold Crew."Mariano G. Vallejo" conducted shakedown and training exercises along the West Coast, in the
Caribbean Sea , and off the coast ofFlorida . Transiting thePanama Canal for the second time on21 March 1967 , she headed for her assigned home port,Pearl Harbor . Arriving10 April , she continued training exercises and sound trials, then returned briefly toMare Island . Thence, she sailed back to Pearl Harbor, becoming, as of1 August , an on-the-line unit of Submarine Squadron 15."27 years of deterrent patrols go here"
"Mariano G. Vallejo" was decommissioned and stricken from the
Naval Vessel Register on9 March 1995 . Ex-"Mariano G. Vallejo" entered the Nuclear PoweredShip and Submarine Recycling Program inBremerton, Washington , on1 October 1994 and on22 December 1995 ceased to exist.
