Solent Football League

Solent Football League

The Solent Football League is a football competition based in Gosport, Hampshire, England. It consists of three divisions but is not connected to the English football league system. It is affiliated to the Hampshire Football Association Limited and is a member of the Portsmouth Football Association.

In the 2007/2008 season, 27 clubs make up the Solent Football League, with eight teams in Division One, nine in Division Two and ten in Division Three.

History

The League was formed in 1987 from Clubs of the Friendly League, was initially called the Solent Premier League, and was not affiliated to any associations.

In 1996 the League applied for affiliation to the Hampshire Football Association, who in turn asked the Portsmouth Football Association to vet the application. It was suggested by the Portsmouth Football Association that the League become the Solent Divisions of the Gosport and Fareham League.

In the 1997/8 season the Solent Premier League became the Solent Divisions of the Gosport and Fareham League, and after one season the Solent Divisions decided to once again apply for affiliation, as the Solent Football League, to the Hampshire Football Association.

The application was successful and led to the League's membership being granted in the 1998/9 season.
