"Placostylus ambagiosus pandora" is a subspecies of very large, air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc in the family Bulimulidae, the bulimulus snails and their allies.

This subspecies is critically endangered.

Distribution

This land snail is endemic to the Spirits Bay area of Northland in the North Island of New Zealand. It is found in rocky scree under cover of "Muehlenbeckia" and "Phormium" (flax), in a small forest remnant, containing "Corynocarpus laevigatus" (karaka) trees.

hell description

The shell is of moderate size, with a very dark reddish-brown interior, ochraceous-salmon rounded lip, and deep reddish within the aperture. The apertural processes are confined to a single strong tubercle on the basal lip. The shell height is up to 71 mm, and width up to 31 mm.

Conservation status

"Placostylus ambagiosus pandora" is classified by the New Zealand Department of Conservation as being "Nationally Critical".
