University museum

A university museum is a museum or collection run by a university, typically founded to aid teaching and research within the university. The Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford in England is an early example, originally housed in the building that is now the Museum of the History of Science. Other examples include the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, and the Manchester Museum. The focus of university museums includes research into, as well as the display of, collections.
