About Heather

Heather is a writer and is married to her husband Brendan. When Heather made her first appearance in Carrigstown, it became apparent that she was Renee Phelan's long-lost daughter. Renee's husband, Christy, forgave her for keeping the adoption a secret. Heather soon developed a close feathership with her true mother. Unfortunately for Heather, she had been having a relationship with Renee's son, Floyd, prior to recent revelations. They eventually decided to end the relationship. Heather left Carrigstown for a while. She returned as a married woman to a doctor, Brendan.

When Brendan discovered that Heather had a relationship with her half-brother Floyd, he was shocked and had a one-night stand with Deirdre Burke, who is now the mother of his child. Heather became pregnant and gave birth to their child. When Heather wrote a novel, The Good Sister, Brendan was shocked to discover that it was based on her relationship with Floyd. This revelation proved too much for Brendan, when he started taking drugs. He gave Leo Dowling the wrong medicine, which nearly caused his death. Brendan took off in his car to avoid the wrath of Leo's wife Lana, but he crashed and was taken to hospital. Brendan and Heather finally put the Floyd saga behind them, but the past came back to haunt Brendan when Deirdre returned for Christmas. Dermot and Jo, who were taking care of her child, invited Brendan and Heather to Christmas dinner. Brendan made it through the day, but Heather still doesn't know that Brendan is the father of Deirdre's child and it's only a matter of time before she finds out.

Heather, meanwhile, was planning on writing a book about the world of prostitutes. When Fareed, the father of his son Hanni, killed the mother and sister, Zoe rescued Hanni and is now fearing for her life. Heather spoke with Tracy and was intrigued to learn about this. After visiting Zoe, Heather got caught up in the police investigation when Brendan was asked about Hanni. Brendan reluctantly lied to protect Hanni. Disguising herself as a prostitute, Heather infiltrated a criminal gang and got a buzz for revealing her body to clients. One night as Heather was leaving a nightclub, a gangland leader confronted her. Realising that she was in too deep, Heather escaped from The Leader and ran home. Later on, The Leader turned up in a restaurant and intimidiated Heather, reminding her of her prostitute status. Brendan found clothes in his car, confirming his suspicions of Heather being a prostitute. Brendan has reluctantly accepted her new status as a means of writing her book, but he warned Heather to be careful.

When Renee began an affair with Bob, Heather was the first person to find out about the infamous love triangle of Renee, Bob and Christy. Although Heather was disgusted by Renee's actions, she decided not to say anything to Christy. Months later, Christy's mother Eunice found out about the affair and told her son. Renee admitted that she no longer loved Christy and that Bob was now her true lover. Christy, disappointed by this, telephoned the children and explained what had happened. Heather admitted that she had known about the affair for months. She befriended Christy during the World Cup, by watching the event on television with him. Heather is still disgusted that Renee is in a relationship with Bob, but she has decided to be civil with him to avoid upsetting her mother.

In 2008, Heather discovered her husband is father to Benjamin Fahy. Upset by this she quickly separated from him. She disallowed him to see their daughter and refused to talk to him. Eventually she forgave him and things returned to normal. However not long after, Heather's half-brother, Floyd returned. She was shocked to learn that he was dying from cancer. They resumed their affair which shocked the entire family when they found out. Floyd and Heather moved into Robin Doyle's apartment however Floyd returned home shortly before he died. Heather was distraught when he passed although was livid when she discovered that Brendan had euthanized him. She threatened to report him for malpractise but he told her that if she did then he'd report her for incest. Renee was disgusted wth Heather, blamed her for misleading Floyd and said she wanted nothing more to do with her now that Floyd was dead.

Barry O'Hanlon, the local reporter became interested when he noticed that Heather was grieving more than the rest of her family. After reading The Good Sister, he pieced together what had been happening over the previous few months. However he had no evidence and the article he was planning was scrapped.

Later in the year, Robin kicked Heather out of the appartment because she was untidy. Brendan offered for her to move back in with him. She decided to get her career back on track by trying to publish memoirs of her childhood of when she was abandoned by Renee and adopted. However, this proved difficult and the only offer she had was from Seamus McAleer to publish a piece from the novel in his local freesheet to generate publicity. After this, Heather found a publisher for the book but they wanted a "happy ending" between Heather and her birth mother. Heather decided to try and bury the hatchet with Renee which she eventually did. However, the publisher became more demanding and asked Heather to include memoirs on the rest of her life which included her relationship with Floyd. Renee was uncomfortable about this but told Heather that she would stand by her no matter what. After a while of soul searching, Heather decided to tear up her contract and take a break from writing.
