Athletics

The first Timor-Leste Olympic team was somewhat less successful in terms of results in Athletics than the Individual Olympic Athletes from Timor-Leste were in Sydney. Trindade did not finish, but was well behind the other runners, while Amaral went from beating two runners to beating only one. Still, Amaral did handily beat the last placed finisher from Mongolia.

Trindade was two minutes behind the leaders after 5 km, and pulled out of the race between the 20 km checkpoint and the halfway point, having fallen 12 minutes behind the second-last runner.
