Alnarp Castle

Alnarp Castle is located in Alnarp, Lomma Municipality, Scania, approximately 10 km north of Malmö in southern Sweden. The original castle on the property was built in the 12th century. The present building was erected in 1862, in Dutch Renaissance style.

History

The castle was mentioned for the first time in the 1100s. In 1325 it belonged to the knight Anders Pedersen. and in 1400, the owner was Aage Nielsen Ulfeldt. In 1449, it had passed into the hands of Niels Stigsen Thott. The Ulfeldt and the Thott families were members of the old Scanian nobility. Through marriage, the castle eventually passed to the Krummedige family, and in 1500 it was owned by Erik Krummedige, an advisor to the Danish king. In 1536, Christian III took possession of the castle for the Danish state.

After the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, king Charles X Gustav of Sweden gave the castle to a his commandant of Malmö, Johan von Essen. In 1660, Charles XI gave it to Gabriel Oxenstierna. From 1694, it became the residence for the Governors-General of Sweden in Scania.

Today

The library of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences is housed in the castle, the largest library of its kind in Sweden. The castle park has the second largest collection of trees in Sweden when it comes to variety
