The film is based on the real-life events of the
Chittisinghpura massacre onMarch 20 ,2000 , in which 37Sikh s were massacred byIslamic Fundamentalists inKashmir . The film revolves around two Sikh brothers, Kuldeep [played by Rahum Dev] and Jaideep [played by Rocky Khanna] whose parents were among the victims of the massacre. They migrate toMumbai . The film contrasts the various ideological and religious movement in India that have extremist views, fromIslamic Fundamentalism toHindu Nationalism , which are often pitted against each other as adversaries. The film revolves around those Muslims who tacitly support Pakistan despite their residing in India.Controversy
The film got into trouble with film censors because of its controversial story and theme and fears of fostering
Hindu /Sikh -Muslim violence. The film was repeatedly censored and scenes were cut out 40 times by theCentral Board of Film Certification . Initially, the CBFC wanted the director to revise the whole film. Since this was not possible, the scenes were cut (thirty-three are sound cuts and seven are visual cuts). Singh has denied allegations that his film isIslamophobic .Reviews
