census GR|2 of 2000, there were 18,495 people, 7,493 households, and 5,342 families residing in the county. Thepopulation density was 30 people per square mile (11/km²). There were 8,472 housing units at an average density of 14 per square mile (5/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 86.92% White, 11.93% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 0.82% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 7,493 households out of which 30.80% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.30% were married couples living together, 10.60% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.70% were non-families. 26.60% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.50% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.92.
In the county the population was spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 25.30% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.60 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $28,539, and the median income for a family was $35,291. Males had a median income of $29,239 versus $20,606 for females. The
