Gustave Roussy (
November 24 ,1874 - 1948) was a Swiss-Frenchneuropathologist .Career
He earned his doctorate from the
University of Paris in 1907 and spent most of his career in Paris. As an intern he worked underneurologist sPierre Marie andJoseph Jules Dejerine .Roussy was involved with all aspects of the
nervous system , and was a prolific writer. He authored or co-authored three works concerning the injuries and treatments associated with psychoneuroses during World War I. He also wrote a 1000-pagemonograph named "Traité de Neuroendocronologie" in regards to his research in the field ofneuroendocrinology .Roussy was interested in the study and treatment of
cancer . Today in the Parisian suburb ofVillejuif is the Institute Gustave-Roussy, a private institution devoted tooncology .Eponyms
Along with other physicians are three eponymous disorders named after him:
* "Darier-Roussysarcoid ": an uncommonsubcutaneous granuloma found insarcoidosis . Named withFerdinand-Jean Darier .
* "Dejerine-Roussy syndrome ": a syndrome caused by lesions of the posteriorthalamus . It occurs in approximately 2% of allstroke patients. Named withJoseph Jules Dejerine .
* "Roussy-Lévy disease":spinocerebellar degeneration withmuscular atrophy of the lower limbs, sensoryataxia , plus other symptoms. A hereditary disease that is usually first noticed in infancy. Named with Dr. Gabrielle Lévy.References
