Teemu Mäki

Teemu Mäki

Teemu Tuomas Mäki (born October 14, 1967 in Lapua) is a Finnish graphic artist.

Mäki has work in painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video-installation, texts, installations, choreography, music and internet-art. In various of his art-pieces he has combined these techniques.

In 1988 Teemu Mäki was brought into the limelight by his video-installation "Sex and Death", which includes a segment in which he kills a cat and following that, masturbates on the cat's dead body. As a result of this Mäki was convicted of fraud and animal cruelty (the fraud conviction stemming from him having given an affidavit to the local animal rescue center, that he would treat the animal given to his care well and would not terminate it without permission from the rescue center). The controversy was revisited in 2004, when the modern art museum Kiasma bought the video into its collection.

Mäki received a Doctorate of Art from the Finnish Art Academy in 2005.

In 1997 Mäki was rewarded by the Finnish Artist Societys "Palokärki" award.

He self-identifies as a socialist and has campaigned for legalization of prostitution.
