baseball in the U.S. (the others beingJimmy Austin and Peter Morris). He was 23 years old when he debuted onJuly 6 ,1896 , with theBoston Beaneaters . After the 1901 season, he retired from baseball to teach full-time atColumbia University and later atWilliams College . He became a prominent educator, eventually serving as president of Massachusetts State College, 1926-27, and theUniversity of New Hampshire from 1927 until his death in Durham,New Hampshire . He is buried in Durham Cemetery.References
