"For the Good of the Outfit" was the 28th episode of the M*A*S*H television series, and third of season two. The episode aired on October 6 1973.

Plot

While operating on a group of wounded locals from a nearby village, Hawkeye and Trapper discover that they were hit by American artillery fire. The village itself has been heavily damaged, prompting the pair to file a report with headquarters. They are assured that the Army will straighten out the situation, but that promise soon proves empty; a story appears in "Stars and Stripes", stating that the village was shelled by the enemy, not the US.

Outraged over this distortion of the facts, Hawkeye tries to enlist his father's help, but his mail is stopped at headquarters and he is put under arrest. He learns that the village is being rebuilt, while the officer to whom he and Trapper gave their report has been transferred--taking the shell fragment evidence with him. In addition, the pair face the very real possibility of being moved to the front lines if they do not let the matter drop. Just then, Frank and Margaret burst in, planning to file a report of their own; they had been on duty when Hawkeye and Trapper operated, and they also saved a few fragments. Confronted with this additional evidence, the public-relations office has no choice but to admit the truth.
