William O. Hall (1914-1977) was the
U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia from 1967 to 1971, during the reign of EmperorHaile Selassie I.William O. Hall was born
May 22 ,1914 , inRoswell, New Mexico . He moved with his family toPrineville ,Oregon when he was seven years old. He graduatedPhi Beta Kappa from theUniversity of Oregon in 1936, pursued graduate studies at theUniversity of Minnesota , served in theU.S. Navy duringWorld War II , and served in theU.S. Foreign Service thereafter. He worked in the consular service, theUnited Nations , and theAgency for International Development .After serving as the
U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia from 1967 to 1971, he retired from theUnited States Foreign Service . He then taughtinternational affairs atLewis and Clark College inPortland, Oregon . He died onNovember 8 ,1977 . Ambassador Hall is survived by his wife, Jayne Bowerman Hall, three children (Sarah Sternglanz, William Hall, and Robert Hall), and two grandchildren (Weylin Sternglanz and Seth Sternglanz).Ambassador Hall's widow, Jayne Bowerman Hall, has donated numerous pieces of Ethiopian artwork to the
University of Oregon Museum of Natural History . Most of the museum's Ethiopian Collection, consisting of nearly 100 objects, was acquired through a gift by Jayne Bowerman Hall as a tribute to her late husband. Jayne Bowerman Hall is the half-sister ofUniversity of Oregon track coach and Nike co-founderBill Bowerman , and the daughter ofJay Bowerman , the 13thgovernor of Oregon .External links
