- Atkarsk
Atkarsk ( _ru. Аткарск) is a town in
Saratov Oblast ,Russia , located at the confluence of the Atkara and Medveditsa Rivers, 92 km northwest ofSaratov . Population: 27,907 (2002 Census); 28,877 (1989 Census).It was founded in place of a Tatar settlement at the mouth of the Atkar River. Town status was granted to it in 1780.
In XVI century the confluence of small river Etkary of the river the She-bear had a soldier's large village, then village Etkara has been transformed to the city of Atkarsk which has become(begun) by the center of district Atkarsk of the Saratov province. In 1358 on a place where the city is now located, in dense woods has been based(founded,established) Settlement the Tatar khan Etkary. On its(his) name have named small river. At that time this place was favourable strategic item(point). An environment favoured to agriculture, animal industries, fishing and hunting.
