Praça dos Três Poderes (Portuguese for "Square of the Three Powers") is a plaza in
Brasília , thecapital ofBrazil . The name is derived from the presence of the three governmental powers around the plaza: the Executive, represented by thePalácio do Planalto (presidential office); the Legislative represented by the Congresso Nacional (National Congress); and theJudiciary , represented by theSupremo Tribunal Federal .The plaza was designed by
Lúcio Costa andOscar Niemeyer as a place where the three powers would meet harmonically, it has now become a tourist attraction of Brasília.The plaza is home to the largest flag in the world to be flown regularly (in this case, continuously). The Brazilian flag hoisted weights about 600
kilogram s (1300 pounds) and has 7,000square metre s (70×100 m = 230×330 feet)Fact|date=July 2008 and has never been taken down (without an simultaneous replacement) since the capital was inaugurated on21 April 1960 .
