University of California, San Diego . The college was named after former AmericanFirst Lady Eleanor Roosevelt , who was a humanitarian as well as a champion of international cooperation and a major member of the earlyUnited Nations .Founding and Academic Philosophy
The college was founded as Fifth College in
1988 in the final declining years of theCold War between theUnited States and theSoviet Union and like UCSD's other colleges, reflects the time and era in which it was built. In the case of Roosevelt, the college was designed to move away from the strict "us-versus-them" worldview that characterized much of twentieth century political thought in hopes of creating a concept of global community and international cooperation. The college's motto is "Developing World Citizens Through Scholarship, Leadership, and Service," and it seeks to make that concept a reality by encouraging its students to think globally and interact on an international rather than local level.Academic Requirements
Like all six colleges, ERC has a set list of academic requirements, often known as General Education Requirements, or GE's. ERC's educational requirements stress international learning and global interaction, and include proficiency in a foreign language, non-western art, as well as its own writing course--
Making of the Modern World (MMW).MMW is a core
writing course that seeks to combine various disciplines includinghistory , religious studies, philosophy ,sociology , andvisual arts into a six-quarter (two year) writing course that offers a survey of the sum total ofworld history --not just from aeurocentric perspective, but from a more international view, including developments inChina ,India ,Africa , and theAmericas .Location and Residence Facilities
Eleanor Roosevelt College was originally opened in
1988 in the southeastern corner of campus, the traditional "staging area" for new UCSD colleges near the Veterans Hospital andInterstate 5 surrounding the area known as Pepper Canyon. In2003 , however, following the opening ofSixth College the previous year, the college moved to its current, multimillion dollar location designed by the architectMoshe Safdie . The residential facilities are named after various global regions and seek to integrate the philosophy of the college into their design as well. There are fiveresidence halls forfreshmen students:*
Africa Hall
*Asia Hall
*Europe Hall
*Latin America Hall
*North America HallIn addition, there are six apartment complexes for returning students:
*Earth Hall North

International House , which contains three building complexes, named after cultural sites around the globe:*Asante House

World Heritage Sites , one from each region labeled in the freshman residence halls: Africa (Asante), Asia (Kathmandu), Europe (Geneva), Latin America (Cuzco), and North America (Mesa Verde).Organization
As with all UCSD colleges, Eleanor Roosevelt College is headed by a provost, who is the organizational leader of the institution. The College is then broken down into
academic affairs andstudent affairs. Academic Advising programs are under the academic affairs wing, while the office of student affairs is responsible for student programming as well as the residence life program at ERC. Both Student Affairs and Academic Affairs departments are headed by a Dean, with a hierarchical chain of staff beneath them.Student Groups
ERC hosts many different student organizations in order to foster and facilitate community, including:
*SCERC (Student Council at ERC)
*PERC (Programming at ERC)
