Dr. John Harmen Marburger, III (born
February 8 ,1941 ) is an Americanphysicist who is the currentScience Advisor to the President and the Director of theOffice of Science and Technology Policy in the administration of PresidentGeorge W. Bush .Marburger was born in
Staten Island, New York and grew up inMaryland . He attendedPrinceton University , graduating in 1962 with a B.A. in Physics, followed by a Ph.D. in Applied Physics fromStanford University in 1967. After completing his education he served as a professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering at theUniversity of Southern California , later becoming chairman of the physics department and Dean of the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. In 1980 he left USC to became president ofSUNY Stony Brook , leading that university until 1994, during which time it became the university with the most federal funding in thenortheastern United States .He later served as trustee of
