Phillip Boyce was a character who appeared in the "" pilot episode "The Cage", and a main character in the comic series .

Character History

Doctor Phillip Boyce was the Chief Medical Officer aboard the USS "Enterprise" in 2254, under the command of Captain Christopher Pike.

The Cage

When Captain Pike lamented the disastrous away mission on Rigel VII and mused retirement, Boyce thoughtfully suggested Pike stop blaming himself, that he set standards for himself that no one could live up to. Boyce not only served the ship in the sickbay, but also acted as the ship's counselor and bartender, figuring "Sometimes a man will tell his bartender things he'll never tell his doctor".

tar Trek: Early Voyages

Although no Star Trek comic books are considered canon, the series fleshed out the characters and story from "The Cage", including Boyce, although this version appeared to be slightly younger than in "The Cage".

Shortly after the events from "The Cage", the Enterprise visited planet Neydra Prime to give medical aid to locals. Boyce led the away team, and while on the surface he murdered a local businessman. Captain Pike wanted to prove his innocence, but Boyce confessed to the murder. During the trial the Vulcan Ambassador, Toluk, who acted as defense council for the doctor performed a mind meld on Boyce to reveal the truth. His mind had been home to another consciousness, an alien he had attempted to save years earlier who died. The ambassador used a special crystal used by Vulcans to store their Katra after death. ( "Immortal Wounds") There were several indications that Boyce was having mental problems leading up to this issue. After they were gone he commented that he felt somewhat "empty" after all the years that his mind was shared.

Boyce was originally assigned to the Enterprise for the ship original five year mission under Captain April where he worked as assistant CMO under Dr. Sarah April. When Captain April left the ship with his wife Boyce was promoted to and served under Captain Pike.("Where Sea Meets Sky" #6 by Jerry Oltion)

Phillip Boyce was replaced by Doctor Mark Piper for the second pilot. Although not Canon, the novel "Enterprise: The First Adventure", by Vonda N. McIntyre, had Boyce promoted to Star Base 23 following his time as the Enterprise's Chief Medical Officer.
